After a much-anticipated wait, the Stihl MS 881 petrol chainsaw is finally here to order. Rolling on from the older model’s success (the MS 880), as expected, this brand new product is already topping sales.

This tool is unmatched in power with its 121.6 cc petrol engine, creating an astonishing output of 8.7 horsepower. With the powerhead weighing only 9.9 kilograms, this gives the MS881 an incredible power to weight ratio of 0.867 hp/per kg.

To keep the engine light and handle all that energy, the building materials used are superior, inside you will find a magnesium crankcase and pistons.

Because of the upgrades to Stihl’s new 2-mix motor, it is the only petrol chainsaw of this size to meet the EU 5 emissions regulations.

Available with three various bar lengths, the Stihl MS 881 is also adaptable to any demanding forestry jobs. Firstly, you can choose from the smaller high-quality Rollomatic ES bars, available in a 30-inch or 36-inch length. If you need something a bit
larger, then a 41-inch Duromatic bar is also an option.

Should you require even more considerable bar lengths, these can be purchased separately.

Additionally, this MS 881 petrol chainsaw can uniquely operate the Stihl .404″ Rapid Super Chain, an extremely high-performance cutting saw chain. Designed with a broad chisel tooth, great for a low cutting resistance, it is ideal for timber harvesting and demanding forestry work.

To keep your chains sharp and working for longer, Stihl design their bars to be low maintenance. For example, the guide bar noses are replaceable, with dedicated holes allowing for efficient lubricating of the chain for a cleaner cut. Also, to assure
more extended durability, the bearings are sealed in the sprocket nose.

Finally, the tensioning screw is on the chainsaw’s side through the sprocket case, which removes the need for contact with the sharp saw’s teeth.

Additionally, swapping over bars and chains is made clear, with captive nuts on the sprocket case ensuring you don’t lose any.

What’s more, the newly designed oil pump regulates the bar’s delivery depending on the engines RPM output. This upgrade is vital when operating the more extensive sized bar lengths that the Stihl MS 881 use.

Another great feature is ElastoStart, which reduces the compression shock when the engine starts from the user’s arms. Restarting the chainsaw is simple too with its one-touch start/stop function, press the decompression switch and pull the starter cord.

HD2 filter

The HD2 filter is made from polyethylene filter material with up to 70% finer pores than fleece and polyamide filters to trap even very fine dust. In addition, it is oil and water-repellent and thus very easy to clean. The PET-covered filter cartridge with quick-release lock enables the filter to be assembled and disassembled in next to no time, without using tools.

Decompression valve

The decompression valve is part of the easy starting system. The valve should be pressed before starting to reduce the compression pressure when starting, as well as reducing the effort needed to pull the starter rope. The decompression valve is semi-automatic; it must be pressed manually before starting, but then closes automatically.

STIHL ElastoStart

STIHL ElastoStart reduces the shock caused by the compression of the engine during starting. The compression shock is taken away from the user’s joints and muscles through a spring or rubber element in the starter handle.

Side chain tensioner

All important functions such as start, choke, throttle and stop are operated via a single lever.

Compensator

This controller in the carburettor prevents the fuel-air mixture getting richer as the air filter becomes clogged. The correct quantity of fuel is delivered to the carburettor depending on the quantity of air passing through the air filter. This keeps the fuel/air ratio in the combustion mixture constant and hence also the engine power. The filter doesn’t need to be cleaned until an appreciable drop in power occurs.

Ematic chain lubrication system

The Ematic chain lubrication system ensures pinpoint lubrication of the saw chain links and guide bar rails. When used with STIHL OILOMATIC saw chain, it will provide maximum lubrication, longer wear and less oil consumption than conventional methods of chain lubrication. The Ematic system can reduce bar oil consumption by up to 50%.

Carburettor heating (V)

By changing the chain saw from summer to winter operation, the intake air is pre-heated over the engine fins. This ensures that the carburettor does not ice up and you can continue working in freezing temperatures.
